I have four-year-old twins that need my time, says Tabor. I have to be at my dinner table every night. Family duties aside, some might say it's impossible for the owner of a remodeling company who handles the lion's share of the design and estimating responsibilities in addtion to being the sole salesperson. But Tabor accomplishes it, by meticulously structuring and managing his company to make sure it runs as efficiently as possible and eventually, he hopes, without him involved in the day-to-day. To do that, Tabor (center) knows he needs to increase his volume while passing portions of his duties to his employees, a challenging juggling act, to be sure. He uses outside designers as subcontractors when the need arises, and is currently training one of them to take over some estimating. He's also grooming a production manager to take over some responsibilities just in time, too, as Tabor estimates that his 2005 volume will be 150% of 2004's total. So far, so good. All the work I've been doing the last couple of years systems, delegation, everything is coming together, Tabor says. What is the Big50? The Big50 was started by Hanley-Wood's REMODELING Magazine in 1986. It is an excellence award for best practices. The foundation of the award was that each company must have a stellar reputation, do quality work, and exhibit the professionalism needed to counter the industry's long-tarnished image. The key to success was customer satisfaction. Every May, REMODELING inducts 50 new companies who have set the standard for professionalism and integrity through smart marketing, exemplary business practices, unique design, and extraordinary impact on their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, growing companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising the standards of the industry. To date, more than 1,000 remodelers who have demonstrated such excellence can boast being a member of the Big50. What is the focus of the Big50? The magazine's editors slot companies into categories of business and industry excellence, such as teamwork and industry impact. The magazine focuses on the best-run companies that have a tight control on costs, know how to target work, and do good, quality remodeling, with honesty and integrity. This awards program has become firmly established as the remodeling industry's Hall of Fame. How are the companies nominated? Once we've received nominations -- typically between 300 and 350 names -- the editorial staff goes to work narrowing the field. Companies nominated by more than one source are strong candidates, as are companies who get strong recommendations from their peers. We talk with a variety of people at the companies themselves, and often to their competitors, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors. Big50 contractors must meet industry standards of operating excellence, and must measure up to certain financial benchmarks. After all this research is complete, the REMODELING editorial staff selects 50 remodelers who exemplify the very best of the industry and have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices. What is the importance of the Big50? Winning the Big50 is truly a once-in-a-lifetime honor. The Big50 has become a community of top-notch remodelers, who are always willing to learn to improve their systems, and ultimately, better serve the public. The award helps to differentiate the company as the best in the business.
