Who is Tabor Design Build?

Our greatest resources are our excellent employees.  These fine people are all truly one out of one hundred.  They make Tabor Design Build, Inc. the great company that it is today.

JohnCrop154_3.jpgJohn Tabor was born in Scotland and has lived in Maryland since he was five years old.  His career in remodeling began in 1979.  He started working as a laborer for a builder who was remodeling his father’s home in Washington, D.C.  It was at that time that Tabor decided to make remodeling his career, and started attending construction management classes at night at Montgomery College.

In the early ‘80s, Tabor worked with a number of remodeling contractors and builders, steadily increasing his skill level.  He advanced from laborer, to carpenter’s helper, to carpenter.  During the recession of the 80s, it was difficult to find steady construction work.  As a result, Tabor began attending college full-time, majoring in engineering.

During the summers he worked as a carpenter building custom homes.  During the school year, Tabor started doing repair work for family and friends on the side.  He thoroughly enjoyed running his own business, and in 1986 he founded Eastern Home Repair and Remodeling.  This company specialized in small remodeling jobs and “handy-man” work in D.C.

After several years of growth, Tabor changed the focus of the company from repair work in D.C., to remodeling in Maryland.  He became licensed in Maryland in 1994 as Tabor Construction, and incorporated in 1997.  Tabor Construction, Inc. focused on design-build additions and other remodeling projects.  It was during this time that Tabor completed NARI’s (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) extensive Certified Remodeler (CR) program.  In 2001, Tabor joined Business Network's peer review group.  The group consists of about ten other remodeling companies from all across the country, who share business practices and techniques.  Every six months they meet and evaluate each other's businesses.  This process helps them improve their business tremendously.

In the summer of 2004, Tabor re-entered the D.C. market, and obtained a D.C. Home Improvement license.  To better reflect the type of work performed by Tabor and his teams, he changed the name of the company to Tabor Design Build, Inc.

In 2005, Tabor Design Build was the recipient of Remodeling magazine’s prestigious BIG50 Award, recognizing Tabor as one of the top 50 remodelers in the country.

In January, 2006, John Tabor moved Tabor Design Build to its current location on Crabbs Branch way in
Rockville, and has undertaken extensive remodeling to the building

In February, 2007, John Tabor joined the Ethics Board of NARI's Metro DC Chapter, to help investigate client complaints and make sure NARI's high standards are maintained by all it's members.
