Holiday Deja Vu

In the midst of the holidays, you are reminded of last year’s plans to renovate your home. The kitchen addition to give your family and guests more space to connect during the holiday festivities, was never built. The basement renovation that will add bedrooms for overnight guests is still on the back burner. Casting a critical eye over your space, you are now reminded of how difficult it was to enjoy the holidays in your home last year. Talk about deja vu!.

How to stop this from happening again

Major projects like additions, full kitchen or master bath remodels, or finished basements typically requires 6 weeks to 12 weeks of planning and design before construction begins. Depending on the scope and size of the project, construction can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months. If you are remodeling for the holidays next year, you want to begin planning your project early, no later than July.

It is important that you don’t wait until the last minute. Although July is the latest we’d recommend waiting, it is wise to plan in advance. At Tabor Design Build, our schedule fills up fast. The same is true for other reputable companies. If you wait too long, the firm you choose may not have enough time to complete your project before the holidays. Preparation is key. Signing a contract and getting on the schedule early, is always better than procrastinating and taking a chance you don’t make the schedule at all.

Additionally, beware of companies promising to complete your project in an extremely short time frame to get your business. An addition cannot be done properly in one month! Short cuts are likely, and the quality and integrity of the work will suffer.

Things to consider

The holidays are a great time to pay attention to how your home performs when filled with lots of people and activities. Things to consider include:

1. Is there a good flow from room to room (i.e. from the living area to the kitchen)?

2. How many people can comfortably fit in each room of your home at one time? The kitchen?

3. Living room? Basement? Based on your findings, do you need more space?

4. How much space do you have for overnight guests? Is that enough?

5. Do you have enough storage to keep your space organized?

Keep track of your answers. They will come in handy when working with a design team helping you put the pieces of your project together.
