hen the Martineau family purchased their home, they knew they wanted a screened porch like the one at their old house.  With Mr. Martineau's background as a nurse, he was concerned about the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.  The rear deck and the second story balcony did not allow for a cozy, protected gathering space.  After just two months in the home they couldn't wait to start enjoying their back yard.  The screened porch needed to protect them from the bugs and the elements, while still being open to the air and the sun.  The final feel of the space was to be cozy and inviting for the whole family.

The rear deck and balcony as they existed did not meet their needs but also made the rear elevation look out of balance with the rest of the home.  As this section of the house was part of a previous addition, it appeared somewhat disconnected and the doors, windows, railings and the deck's elevation gave the illusion of a houseboat.  The screened porch could be used to enhance the rear elevation and anchor the addition to the house and yard.  The relocation of the side entrance to the deck would allow for a cleaner rear entrance with a more balanced deck and rail.

The finished screened porch fit all the family's needs.  By removing the second story balcony, a proportioned roof line was created that gave the rear elevation a more solid presence.  The screens provided a darker contrast to the white trim and panel area, adding dimension.  With the addition of lattice at the base, the porch feels grounded to the backyard.  The new stairs and railing to the side welcome you to the backyard rather than the side yard and are more in keeping to the scale of the house.  With the roof for cover and the panels at the bottom, the screened porch has a cozier feel.

Skylights, ceiling light and a fan were added to brighten the space and cool it down as needed.
