Background
This bathroom remodel focused on updating a dated, builder-grade ensuite typical of many homes built in the 1990s. The space no longer met the needs of the homeowners’ daughter and felt cluttered, outdated, and underwhelming. A rarely used bathtub dominated the room, limiting functionality and visual appeal.
Tabor Design Build was brought in to create a modern bathroom renovation that balanced timeless design with durability – a space that would feel sophisticated today and continue to age gracefully over time.
Client Requirements
The homeowners had a clear vision for their bathroom renovation:
-
Remove the outdated bathtub and replace it with a walk-in shower
-
Create a chic, modern bathroom design with a neutral palette
-
Incorporate bold contrast using matte black fixtures
-
Improve functionality and ease of use
-
Select durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for everyday living
-
Make the bathroom feel more open and updated
The goal was to create a bathroom that felt elevated, practical, and tailored to a growing family.
Design Process
Our design process began with a careful evaluation of the existing layout and finishes. The original bathroom reflected a builder-grade design common in the 1990s, offering little flexibility or visual interest.
Through collaborative design sessions, we developed a plan that focused on clean lines, minimalism, and thoughtful upgrades. Key decisions included:
-
Replacing the tub with a walk-in shower
-
Selecting Calacatta-look porcelain tile for a cohesive, timeless look
-
Introducing matte black hardware for contrast
-
Designing a custom vanity that balances style and durability
-
Reconfiguring the door frame to improve flow and usable space
Each choice was guided by how the bathroom would be used every day.
Key Transformations

From Bathtub to Walk-In Shower
The original bathtub was removed and replaced with a walk-in shower featuring Calacatta porcelain tile on the walls and floor. A one-panel glass shower screen keeps the space feeling open while maintaining function.
Matte black plumbing fixtures add bold contrast, creating a modern, sophisticated aesthetic.
Custom Vanity with Coordinated Finishes
A custom laminate vanity with textured Richelieu Syncron Cobalto panels was installed to replace the outdated vanity. The durable surface resists scratches, UV rays, and fading — making it ideal for long-term use.
A Quartz Veria Calacatta countertop was selected to coordinate seamlessly with the tile, reinforcing a cohesive design throughout the bathroom.
Lighting, Mirror, and Modern Features
The bathroom features a Miseno frameless mirror with integrated LED lighting, an IR sensor, a built-in magnifying mirror, and a digital clock. These modern conveniences enhance daily routines while adding a polished, high-end feel.
Improved Layout and Flow
To make the bathroom feel more spacious, the door frame was bumped out and relocated. This subtle layout change improved circulation and created a more comfortable, open feel.
