Background
When the homeowners began to feel limited by their home’s layout, they knew it was time for a change. The existing floor plan suffered from poor traffic flow, dark interior spaces, and a disconnect between the original home and a previous rear addition. Narrow doorways created bottlenecks, the family room felt undersized for entertaining, and the front entry quickly became cluttered due to a lack of functional storage.
Rather than relocating, the homeowners partnered with Tabor Design Build to reimagine their space, seeking better flow, increased natural light, and improved functionality, all within a carefully managed budget.
Client Requirements
The homeowners were focused on thoughtful improvements that would enhance both daily living and entertaining:
-
Open the family room to the living room and kitchen for better flow and connection
-
Expand the family room to comfortably host gatherings
-
Increase natural light throughout the main living areas
-
Redesign the front entry to include storage and improve circulation
-
Replace the existing winding staircase with a safer, code-compliant solution
-
Ensure all additions blended seamlessly with the home’s existing architecture
Design Process
Tabor Design Build approached the renovation with a strategy centered on targeted additions and interior reconfiguration. A one-story rear addition was designed to expand the family room while removing an unused second-story balcony that blocked natural light. Structural openings were carefully planned to open bearing walls and improve visibility and movement throughout the main level.
At the front of the home, the design team proposed extending the vestibule to create a functional mudroom, transforming a dark, cramped entry into a welcoming and organized arrival space. The staircase was redesigned with a mid-level landing and opened surroundings, making it safer, more functional, and visually integrated into the home.
Throughout the process, 3D renderings allowed the homeowners to fully envision the transformation, ensuring clarity and confidence before construction began.
