Multigenerational Remodel: From Basic Basement to Splendid Suite

By September 27, 2021January 17th, 2024No Comments3 min read

More and more homeowners are coming up with creative ways to incorporate multigenerational solutions into their homes. These renovations help keep loved ones comfortable and close while maintaining separation and privacy for all. Some homeowners make room by crafting in-law suite additions — but expanding a home’s footprint isn’t the only way. Let’s look at how one Rockville family repurposed their basement into an inviting in-law suite complete with a full kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom:

Charming Living Room

Charming Living Room

Fortunately, this basement already had a beautiful wood-burning fireplace surrounded by a stunning brick wall. We added a rustic, reclaimed barn wood mantle and mounted a TV above. Now, this space is perfect for cozying up in front of a fire and watching a favorite movie (furry friends included, of course).

Warm Wood Kitchen

This isn’t your typical basement kitchenette! The full kitchen is ready for even the most adventurous chef. It’s also styled beautifully, with a brick-look tile backsplash that echoes the brick around the fireplace. Custom cherry cabinets bring warmth to the space and look fantastic with the dark hardware, appliances, and countertops.

Cozy Bedroom

The bedroom is a welcoming retreat full of warmth and lightness. Windows were enlarged to meet code but also let in more natural light, and the beautiful pendant with vintage-styled bulbs is an elegant focal point.

Black & White Bathroom

Even the bathroom is bursting with character, with striking, black-accented tile, a farmhouse sink, and an antique vanity made from a treasured Singer sewing machine that was passed down within the family. We found metal to match the hardware on the sewing machine and incorporated a unique toilet paper holder. We added built-in shelving to provide additional storage, and installed a low-threshold shower with grab bars for safety and ease.

Private Entrance & Patio

Just outside the sliding glass doors is a convenient patio area. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some fresh air. The patio is also home to the suite’s own entrance which provides a level of privacy. This entrance is more than just convenient; it also makes the suite much safer by eliminating the need to climb up and down stairs to the main door.
